A report published by relatives of residents at the Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum has strongly criticised the proposed relocation of the facility.
The Government plans to move the hospital to the site of the new super prison at Thornton Hall in north Co Dublin.
This afternoon a leading economist said the plan to relocate the hospital was a daft notion.
Friends First Chief Economist Jim Power has been working with relatives of residents at the CMH in compiling the report.
He said that the plan to relocate the hospital seems to have been plucked out of thin air.
The Patients not Prisoners report claims that relocating the hospital to a prison site is not best therapeutic practice and campaigners say that human rights groups across the world have reservations over such a proposal.
A joint declaration opposing the relocation plan - included in the report - is supported by 29 individuals and organisations including Fine Gael, the Labour Party and Sinn Féin.
The Mental Health Coalition said today that opposition from staff and residents at the CMH should not be ignored.
