Rescue services were called to assist an injured yachtsman on board his boat, around 150km south of Mizen Head, Cork.
The lone yachtsman, who was English, was on his way from the Azores to the UK when the accident happened.
The Castletownbere lifeboat and an Air Corps surveillance plane were called to the scene.
