Muslim headress in school - Principal criticises lack of departmental guidance

The Minister for Education has said he has asked Integration Policy Minister Conor Lenihan to consider the matter of school dress codes and cultural and religious diversity.

Batt O'Keeffe's statement came as a Co Wexford secondary school principal criticised the Department of Education for failing to issue a general policy on the wearing of Muslim headdress in school.

Nicholas Sweetman, principal of Gorey Community School, which is one of the country's largest second level schools, said he felt isolated by the Department's lack of guidance to State schools and Muslim families.
