Ten dead in Tamil Tiger suicide attack

Eight police and two civilians have been killed in a suicide bombing in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

A suspected Tamil Tiger militant crashed his motorcycle into a police bus in a commercial quarter of the capital near the Hilton Hotel.

More than 85 people were wounded in the blast.

The area is a high security zone that is also the site of the Sri Lanka's presidential office and military headquarters.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa condemned the attack and appealed for calm.

Last Friday, Sri Lankan air force jets bombed rebel positions in the far north of the island for a second day running.

So far, according to a compilation of military data, about 360 rebels have been killed in the fighting in May with the loss of 41 soldiers. An estimated 70,000 people have been killed in the 25-year civil war.
