Mobile phones - RSA launches new safety campaign
Mobile phones - RSA launches new safety campaign

New research has shown that people who use a mobile phone while driving are four times more likely to have a crash.

Road safety experts are calling on all drivers to stop using phones while in the car.

However Garda figures show that many motorists are continuing to break the law.

The Road Safety Authority has launched a new campaign to highlight the dangers of driving while using a mobile phone.

It includes a new 30-second radio advertisement.

Separately, Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey has said he is anxious to see mutual recognition of penalty points on both sides of the border implemented as soon as possible.

Speaking at the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement, Mr Dempsey said mutual recognition was a difficulty.

He said Northern Ireland and Britain needed to align their penalty points systems first.

Mr Dempsey said mutual recognition of penalty points was extremely important and he was anxious that it would not take as long as he had been told it could take.

In relation to the disqualification of drivers being recognised on both sides of the border, Mr Dempsey said this was easier.

He said a meeting was scheduled for 10 June between officials from his department and their Northern Irish counterparts to put a timetable in place.
