Irish whiskey fans are in for a treat with the release of a new 15-year-old which a Co Westmeath-based distiller claims is the world's oldest bottling of Irish grain whiskey.

Single grain whiskeys are very rare as most grain whiskey is used in blended whiskeys.

The new whiskey will be limited to 5,000 bottles. It is aged in single use bourbon oak casks imported from Kentucky and matured in the 200-year-old granite warehouses of the Old Kilbeggan Distillery in Co Westmeath.

The extra aging is thought to produce a more complex, robust whiskey with new depths and layers of flavours.

The whiskey's regular counterpart, eight-year-old Greenore Single Grain, has won several international prizes.
