Kilmovee - Investigation into plane crash

The Air Accident Investigation Unit is to investigate yesterday's fatal plane crash in Co Mayo.

A 51-year-old man died and another man remains in a serious condition after a two-seater Beech 77 light aircraft came down in a field in Kilmovee yesterday evening.

Gardaí have named the victim as Markus Casey from Dr Mannix Road in Salthill, Co Galway.

Mr Casey was well known in aviation circles in the west of Ireland and his company Shoreline Aviation operated an aircraft maintenance business at Ireland West Airport, Knock.

Preliminary investigations suggest the plane suffered a technical failure during its flight from Knock Airport to Weston Airport in Dublin.

The wreckage will be brought to Gormanston in Co Meath for a detailed examination.

The injured man remains in hospital in Castlebar.
