Final day for NI investment conference

A major conference in Belfast aimed at securing US investment in Northern Ireland ends today, with top US executives exploring what opportunities exist for them.

Last night Taoiseach Brian Cowen said the two governments, along with the executive in Northern Ireland, are determined to ensure the true economic potential of the area is unleashed.

He said the new Cabinet would show the same commitment to peace and prosperity as his predecessor Bertie Ahern.

The formal part of the three-day conference is now over. It could be a number of years, however, before its success is measured.

Some of the US executives visited firms in their sector, which have already set up business in Northern Ireland.

There have been some job announcements at the conference but these were in the pipeline - now the Northern administration will aim to build on this event.

Last night, at a gala dinner in Hillsborough Castle, First Minister Ian Paisley told guests the old days are over.

Meanwhile, Mr Cowen said the true measure of the success of the peace process was plain to see - ordinary people living their lives without fear or apprehension.
