The RTÉ Trade Union Group has confirmed that the two largest unions, SIPTU and the National Union of Journalists, have voted for industrial action over pensions.

A spokesperson confirmed that they received a mandate from their members, with staff voting by a margin of 85% to 15%  to take industrial action in the row.

The spokesperson said they would be meeting as soon as possible to decide what action to take on foot of the ballot result.

Up to 1990, all RTÉ staff were in a guaranteed superannuation pension scheme.

However, new entrants since then have been in a defined contribution pension scheme, which carries no guarantee of final pension.

The majority of RTÉ staff are now in the defined contribution scheme and are campaigning for improved retirement arrangements.

RTÉ said in a statement that it hopes that as the TUG has now completed its ballot and has a mandate for industrial action, it will consider invoking the assistance of the National Implementation Body.

The company said that pensions had been a major focus of attention in RTE since 2000.

It said RTÉ was fully committed to the principle of ensuring decent pensions for staff within the confines of reasonable financial prudence.
