Airline to slow down flights to save fuel

Brussels Airlines - Concerns over fuel costs

Belgium's Brussels Airlines has announced plans to slow down its flights in an effort to cut fuel costs and reduce emissions.

The carrier's flights will be lengthened by one minute, or a maximum of two, according to spokesman Geert Sciot.

He said that the result will be a €1.1m saving on the airline's fuel bill.

Mr Sciot said that Brussels Airlines was also taking steps to reduce the weight of its aircraft, which would also ease consumption of aviation fuel.

The company is currently changing seats on its aircraft, which will translate into 50kg less weight per plane.

But he underlined that baggage weight limits would not be affected.

With oil prices hitting record highs, spiking to near $120 per barrel in New York yesterday, some companies have looked to shift their rising fuel bill onto ticket prices.

Mr Sciot said that Brussels Airlines had no plans yet to follow suit, but that the carrier is following the situation day by day.
