Pope Benedict XVI has ended his six-day visit to the US with a mass for 55,000 people at Yankee Stadium in New York.

Earlier, he visited Ground Zero, the site of two of the 11 September attacks in 2001.

US Vice-President Dick Cheney hosted a farewell ceremony for the Pope at New York's JFK airport, which was also attended by former president Bill Clinton and his wife and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.

The trip coincided with the third anniversary of Pope Benedict's election to the Papacy and his 81st birthday.
