Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has praised recent changes in Northern Ireland in his comments to the Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.

Mr Ahern said the establishment of the committee is a sign of 'the huge change north and south' 10 years on.

He stressed the restoration of devolved government in Northern Ireland and the improved relationship with the unionist community.

The agreement provided a framework for the changes, he said.

Labour TD Ruairi Quinn said that in remembering those who contributed to the Good Friday Agreement, the chair 'forgot to mention politicians who had negotiated Sunningdale.'

'We still have a long way to go to achieve tolerance and mutual trust in Ireland,' Mr Quinn said.

Mr Quinn joined Fine Gael TD Fergus O'Dowd in calling for unionists to sit at the committee table.

Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin also welcomed the transformation in Ireland and said the peace process had been consolidated successfully.

But he warned that all-Ireland cooperation had yet to be implemented, saying there was much work to ensure future success.
