Primary schools are facing serious financial crisis unless current funding levels are doubled, according to the managers of the country's primary schools.

In an unprecedented move, representatives from every primary school in Ireland came together to address an Oireachtas Committee on what they say is a mounting crisis in schools.

The Joint Committee on Education and Science was told that 46 Catholic schools are in serious debt with no way of clearing it.

The General Secretary of the Catholic Primary Schools Management Association, Dan O'Connor, said if the parish cannot pay, 'the diocese, the patron must take up the flak'.
