The average weekly rate for nursing home care is €778, according to the fifth annual survey of private nursing homes.

The study highlights a significant increase in the number of private and voluntary nursing home beds, which rose by 974 in 2007.

It also shows an increase in staffing costs of 21%, which is attributed in part to the provision of more complex medical care in nursing homes.

According to the study, just over half of those in nursing homes are in the high dependency category, while one-third have been diagnosed with dimentia.

The private sector accounts for around two-thirds of the nursing home beds in the country, with 18,883 available compared with 9,675 beds provided in public nursing homes.

The survey was carried out for Nursing Homes Ireland, the umbrella organisation for the private and voluntary nursing home sector.
