Stomach bugs are costing the island of Ireland €135m each year, according to a new report released today.

The report published by Safefood, a cross-border organisation that promotes food safety, says that approximately 10% of people in Ireland have reported that they suffer from the symptoms of gastroenteritis each year.

Health care and days missed by workers through illness make up the majority of the cost.

Gastroenteritis is a common illness of the digestive system, which is usually caused by germs.

Safefood says that washing hands thoroughly and adhering to food safety guidelines can help to reduce the number of cases of the illness.
