An RTÉ News documentary, which tells the story of how 20,000 Brazilians are making new lives for themselves in Ireland, has received a prestigious film festival award in the US.

'Little Brazil, Gort, Ireland' has been presented with a Silver Angel Award by the Excellence in Media Foundation.

The Foundation presents awards each year to films and television programmes 'of outstanding moral, ethical or social impact'.

It described the RTÉ documentary as 'a wonderful piece of television programming'.

The programme, written and presented by Jim Fahy and produced by Caroline Bleahen, was broadcast on RTÉ One in March 2006.

The documentary is a portrait of Brazilian immigrant life in Ireland today and an analysis of how Gort has coped with a huge influx of South American workers and their families.

Gort's Brazilian story started over ten years ago when the town of Villa Fabril, a small rural village in central Brazil, was hit by the collapse of its local meat plant.

Over 900 men and women were left with no work.

The closure triggered a wave of emigration that completely transformed everyday life in the market town of Gort.
