Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher has left hospital after undergoing tests.

Mrs Thatcher, who is 82, felt faint during a dinner party last night and was taken as a precaution to a central London hospital, where she spent the night, her spokesperson said.

'She's very comfortable and she had a comfortable night. She's feeling a lot better, much revived,' he said.

As Britain's first and so far only female prime minister, Thatcher was dubbed the 'Iron Lady', earning a reputation as one of the most formidable politicians of her era.

She came to power in 1979 and governed for more than 10 years before being ousted by members of her own party.

She retired from the House of Commons in 1992.
