The Irish Pharmaceutical Union is warning that pharmacy services may be disrupted tomorrow as its members attend a Special General Meeting in Dublin.

The meeting has been called to consider the implications of the failure to agree contractual changes with the pharmacists' representative body and the HSE.

The HSE, from the beginning of this month, has reduced the amount it reimburses pharmacists for the wholesale mark-up of drugs from almost 18% to 8%.

The IPU says it expects as many as 500 pharmacists from across the country to attend tomorrow’s meeting.

Pharmacists are encouraging patients to visit their pharmacist today or on Thursday if they need to get a prescription dispensed.

The union has asked individual pharmacists to put measures in place to ensure prescriptions can be dispensed in emergency situations.

Patients are advised to speak to their local pharmacist about arrangements in their area.
