A report has found that the Ballymun regeneration project in Dublin will cost twice as much as originally planned.

According to the Comptroller and Auditor General, it is now estimated that the project will cost over €900m to complete.

In 1997 the Government approved a proposal to address high levels of economic and social deprivation in Ballymun.

A plan for the programme was developed in 1998 and set a target for completion of demolition and rebuilding work by 2006.

However a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General has found that this target was over-ambitious and the revised target for finishing the project is now 2012.

The report has also found that the Ballymun regeneration project which was originally estimated to cost €442m will now cost over €900m.

The financial over-run is being blamed on extra costs and inflation.
