Fires prompt safety concerns in Bray

Concerns have again been expressed about the safety of houses in the Oldcourt Estate in Bray, Co Wicklow, after another house was destroyed by fire.

The fire broke out in the terraced house just after midnight. Two units of the Bray Fire Service fought the blaze.

The house was empty at the time.

The Garda Technical Unit will examine the scene.

Sinn Féin councillor John Brady says this latest incident reinforces the need to implement the recommendations of last year's safety audit commissioned by Bray Town Council.

The audit of 50 houses was carried out by two independent experts and revealed that safety in each of the houses was compromised by serious faults.

Gaps in dividing walls in attics could allow fire spread to neighbouring houses. The widespread use of bitumen felt in external walls and on roofs was also criticised.

The report highlighted the lack of electric sockets, particularly in kitchens, which has led to the over use of extension leads.

Experts recommended all 230 houses in the estate be examined and priority remedial works be undertaken immediately.

According to the town council, many of the recommendations have already been carried out. The remainder of the work will be completed this year at a cost of €1m.

In the past 20 years there have been at least 14 house fires in the Oldcourt Estate in Bray.

Eight people, including five children, died as a result of those fires.
