Port Tunnel closures cannot continue - IBEC

Port Tunnel - Inquiry into closure
Port Tunnel - Inquiry into closure

Various bodies have been reacting to the nine-hour closure of the Dublin Port Tunnel yesterday which resulted in severe traffic disruption.

The Irish Business and Employers Confederation has said the frequent closures of the tunnel cannot continue.

IBEC Transport Executive Paul Sweetman said that unplanned closures of the tunnel have been occurring almost on a monthly basis.

He said that when the tunnel is repeatedly closed due to systems failures, strong and decisive action is required to rectify the problem.

He referred to the tunnel as an integral part of the transport network that provides a crucial link for the movement of people and goods across the capital and said that unplanned closures are causing commuters, hauliers and companies major inconvenience.

The National Roads Authority has meanwhile begun an investigation into the incident and has indicated that it may take legal action against the consortium which built the tunnel.

Hugh Cregan, Head of the Public-Private Partnership unit with the NRA, also confirmed that the body has put the consortium which built the tunnel on legal notice.

The body may take a legal claim for compensation over repeated systems failures which it claims have led to frequent closures.

The nine-hour closure from 10am in the morning was caused by a malfunction of the tunnel's electronic systems and led to major traffic delays.

Today one lane southbound of the Port Tunnel is closed for 1km as part of the investigation into yesterday's incident.
