Sack of spuds for Bertie's woes

A London-based performance artist is planning an unusual show of empathy for the Taoiseach by pulling a sack of spuds through the capital.

Mark McGowan's Potatoes for Bertie Ahern is to involve the artist dressing up as Bertie Ahern, and crawling while attempting to pull a 300kg bag of potatoes through Dublin for 6km.

Mr McGowan says his intention is to show the people of Ireland just how hard it is being Bertie Ahern.

The event starts in Ballymun at 11am on Wednesday at the old swimming pool and ends at Fagans in Drumcondra, just opposite the Taoiseach's constituency office.

Mr McGowan plans to present the potatoes to the Taoiseach at the end of the performance.

'I think people give Bertie Ahern a hard time and I for one believe him to be a wonderful man and a great leader of the Irish nation,' Mr McGowan says.

'Unfortunately the recent Mahon Inquiry is very difficult for Bertie and I want to show the people of Ireland how hard it must be for him, he has always done his best.'

The artist acknowledges the performance will be a struggle, but adds that he is in training and is hopeful of a fantastic art event.

The performance is part of an art exhibition entitled 'Art in the Life World'.
