The UN human rights body has voiced concern at the fate of missing opposition leaders in Chad.

Rupert Colville, spokesman for the High Commissioner for Human Rights, also urged Chad to conduct a full investigation into reports that large numbers of civilians were killed during the fighting, and to hold those responsible to account.

Chadian authorities yesterday acknowledged that the missing include two top opposition figures - Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh, spokesman for the opposition alliance, and veteran opposition leader Ngarlejy Yorongar.

A third opposition leader, former president Lol Mahamat Choua, was found alive last week.

After a failed rebel offensive in the capital this month, all three were seized from their homes by armed and uniformed men.

Their relatives and the opposition have accused President Idriss Deby Itno's presidential guard of rounding them up.

Chad has been under a state of emergency since last Friday.

A first contingent of Irish troops arrived there yesterday to join the EU peace mission.

A further 400 are due there by May.
