Lisnaskea - Four died in car crash

A man who admitted causing the deaths of four of his friends by dangerous driving has been jailed for seven years by a court in Northern Ireland.

Daniel John McDonnell, 21, from Galloon Gardens in Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh, was also banned from driving for 12 years.

Dungannon Crown Court heard that McDonnell was drunk and speeding when he lost control of his car. It crashed into a tree on the Newtownbutler road outside Lisnaskea in July 2006.

Four back seat passengers died in the collision. 21-year-old Peter Leonard and 21-year-old Jonathan McDonald died along with 16-year-old Anita Swift and 17-year-old Danica O'Rourke. The driver's cousin was seriously injured.

The tragedy was compounded when the bodies of the two teenage girls were wrongly identified.

Mr McDonnell changed his plea to guilty last month, as his trial was about to start.

He admitted causing the four deaths and grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving.

Other charges including causing death by driving with excess alcohol, and driving whilst unfit and without due care were not proceeded with.
