Most fatal road crashes over the last 13 months happened between 4pm and midnight, the Oireachtas Transport Committee has heard.

Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy said the most dangerous days for fatalities were Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

He said 33 people died on the roads between 1 January and 5 February, and the largest number died between 8pm and 10pm.

Of the total, three people died between midnight and 2am.

Mr Murphy also told the committee he had approval to buy 100 in-car cameras that will be able to read vehicle number plates and tell whether the vehicle was stolen, was taxed or insured.

Road Safety Authority Chief Executive Noel Brett told the committee that one in five fatal road crashes across Europe were thought to be connected to driver fatigue.

He said fatigue was now right up there along with drink-driving and speeding as a cause of road deaths.

He said drivers had to understand that opening a window, or turning up the radio, did not work in combating fatigue.
