The Irish Medical Organisation has called for a phasing out of alcohol licences in supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations.
The organisation is also calling on the Government to legislate for a minimum pricing structure for alcohol.
Meanwhile, the Fine Gael Senate leader has called for alcohol to be added to the remit of the National Drugs Strategy.
Senator Frances Fitzgerald said the move would ensure that alcohol abuse was addressed in a co-ordinated national manner.
She said it would also enable research to be carried out on links between alcohol abuse and drug use.
