Irish banks hit hard in market slide

Shares on the Dublin stock exchange dropped by almost 4% today after negative statements from Readymix and DCC.

Shares in Readymix fell by 16%, while DCC was down 4.6% this afternoon.

Banks also fell sharply. AIB and Bank of Ireland were both down over 3% and Anglo Irish bank and Irish Life & Permanent dropped over 6%.

At 4pm, the ISEQ was down 226.79 points to 6682.35.

Other European markets were also down, but losses were not as big.

London's FTSE slipped 2%, while the German DAX and the Paris CAC fell nearly 3%.

Wall Street shares also slid. In the first exchanges, the Dow Jones fell 1.31% to while the Nasdaq shed 1.49%.
