Enda Kenny - Reports link FG leader with businessman

The Fine Gael party has responded to reports today linking its leader Enda Kenny with the businessman Norman Turner.

Mr Turner was trying to build controversial casino in Phoenix Park in the 1990s.

It was reported today that Mr Kenny met with business partners of Mr Turner in 1995.

In a statement tonight, Fine Gael said 'there is no significance in the fact that the then Minister for Tourism and Trade, Enda Kenny met with casino promoters' and said ministers of all parties met with them during that period.

Fine Gael says the Sunday Independent story omitted to mention that the decision not to amend the gaming legislation to facilitate a casino operation was taken by the rainbow government in 1996.

This followed consideration of a report from a task force on casinos set up by that government.
