22 Progressive Democrat councillors met in Galway today and recommended that the party elects a new leader within two months.
The party is set to change its rules next month to allow a non-Oireachtas member take the helm. It currently has 28 elected councillors nationwide.
Galway Councillor Declan McDonnell said there was disappointment expressed at the meeting that a leader has not been elected yet, but the focus now is on finding a new number-one from either inside or outside the Oireachtas.
He added that the new leader will bring the party into the next local elections in 2009.
This view was echoed by South Dublin Councillor Cáit Keane who said the party had a strategy to succeed in the local elections and it will not be going away.
Today's meeting was chaired by TD Noel Grealish and was also attended by Senators Fiona O'Malley and Ciaran Cannon. Party founder Bobby Molloy was also there.
