A senior Lebanese intelligence officer has been killed with three other people in a bombing in Beirut.

Army sources said it was the second time Captain Wissam Eid, a member of  the Internal Security Forces, had been targeted.

He was involved in many investigations concerning bombings in Lebanon, including a February 2007 bombing in a Christian area.

Many of the bombings over the past three years have been blamed by Lebanon's Western-backed parliamentary majority on neighbouring Syria, a charge denied by Damascus.

Today's explosion rocked the mainly Christian Hazmiyeh area, which houses several diplomatic missions and residences, shortly after 8am (Irish time).

The blast occurred ten days after a car bomb damaged a US diplomatic car in the Lebanese capital, killing three people and injuring 16.
