A survey has found that obesity among Irish teenagers is increasing, particularly among boys.

The survey, carried out researchers from UCD and UCC, also shows that a third of 13-17 year olds do not eat any fruit.

This study shows that 19% of teenage boys are now overweight, compared to just 6% in 1990.

In girls, the figure has risen from 15% to 17% in that time.

Four in five teenagers are not getting enough fibre, and over half exceed recommended fat intake.

Salt intake is also higher than recommended.

Teenagers with overweight parents are more likely to be overweight themselves.

The Food Safety Authority is currently drawing up new healthy eating guidelines, including a revision of the traditional food pyramid, and the results of this survey will be useful in putting that together.
