A nationalist candidate has won the first round of Serbia's presidential election today setting up a run-off that will shape Serbian ties with the EU after the expected loss of Kosovo.

Results from independent monitors showed Tomislav Nikolic at 39.4% of the vote, not enough to win outright.

He will face pro-Western President Boris Tadic, who took 35.4% percent, in a 3 February run-off.

Voters in Serbia turned out in large numbers for presidential elections today.

The campaign has been dominated by the future of Kosovo, whose Albanian majority are seeking independence from Serbia, and relations with the EU.

An hour before polls closed, turnout stood at 58.2%, the highest since the fall of Slobodan Milosevic in 2000.

Meanwhile four people were injured in an explosion in the Kosovo capital Pristina today.

However police brushed off fears that the blast could be politically motivated.
