The area around a dangerous building on the corner of the North Circular Road and Russell Street is closed to all traffic, as engineers dismantle the three-story structure.

Parts of North Circular Road, Russell Street, Fitzgibbon Street and Emmet Street are sealed off near the Mater Hospital and Mountjoy prison.

Restrictions around the area remain in place until at least 2pm tomorrow.

The building, formerly the Intertool shop, had already started to collapse when demolition experts began taking it down yesterday.

Gardaí have asked the public to avoid the area.

Traffic restrictions include the following:

1. Fitzgibbon Street is closed at the top of Mountjoy Square East - no traffic is permitted to enter at this junction.

2. North Circular Road Junction with North Great Georges Street: traffic is diverted at this point - no traffic is permitted to travel towards Gills Corner.

3. North Circular Road Junction with Belvedere Road: traffic is diverted at this point - no traffic is permitted to travel towards Gills Corner.

4. Clonliffe Road junction with Jones Road: only local access for residents/businesses. Jones Road is closed.

5. Russell Street Garda on duty to prevent (any local access) vehicles proceeding beyond Russell Street Bridge.
