US President George W Bush has held discussions with Democrat and Republican congressional leaders in an effort to agree measures to revitalise the US economy.
Amid fears that the world's largest economy could already be in recession, it is understood all the parties are agreed that an urgent package is needed.
Mr Bush is expected to outline today the kind of proposals he would like to see implemented.
The head of the US Federal Reserve, Ben Bernanke, has indicated he is in favour of short-term fiscal measures to stimulate activity such as tax rebates for individuals and credits for business investment.
