Minister for Defence Willie O'Dea has described the involvement of Irish troops in peacekeeping efforts in Chad as the most challenging mission ever undertaken by the Defence Forces.
He also said the success of the operation is crucial to the credibility of the EU's engagement in crisis management.
50 members of the Army Ranger Wing and support elements will deploy to Chad early next month.
The remaining 400 troops will follow them in March.
