Several people have died and 70,000 others have been displaced by floods in central Mozambique.

With more heavy rain expected, the situation is expected to worsen until mid-February.

The death toll could now be as high as 50.

Heavy downpours had been predicted during this rainy season and the population had been warned, helping to reduce the number of victims.

More than 70,000 people have been moved to schools and other public buildings.

Overall, the southern African country is gearing up to evacuate more than 200,000 people.

The Red Cross and Red Crescent warned today that much of southern Africa faces potentially disastrous flooding, while the situation in Mozambique is particularly worrying.
