Labour Party leader Eamonn Gilmore has again called on Bertie Ahern to resign as Taoiseach.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio's This Week, he said he does not believe Mr Ahern's explanation to the Mahon Tribunal.

Mr Gilmore said he believes Fianna Fáil members who supported Bertie Ahern in last September's vote of confidence will move to shaft him when they conclude he is a liability as leader, just as Fianna Fáil shafted Albert Reynolds, Charles Haughey and Jack Lynch.

He said those who supported Mr Ahern in the formation of the Government after the last general election now have to make up their minds whether Mr Ahern should continue as leader.

Mr Gilmore said the PDs have folded back into Fianna Fáil and he does not think the Greens were up to the job.

He said we need to have a Government that is completely focused on the job but instead we have a Government that is led by a Taoiseach who is preoccupied with problems he had with his own finances 15 years ago.

A spokesman for the Green Party said the party is not interested in Mr Gilmore's comments. ‘We are in government to fulfill a programme of work and that is our focus. We feel his remarks may reflect more upon his continuing frustration at the general election outcome than anything else.’

Benchmarking

Asked about benchmarking, Mr Gilmore said he thinks there is a fundamental flaw and unfairness in a system of pay determination that insists on people in high earning jobs getting big pay increases and those in lower pay jobs getting no increases at all.

He said that one of the problems with the Benchmarking process is that it is seeking to replicate what is happening in the private sector.

He said there is a huge disparity in pay in this country and said a public debate is required on levels of pay and the value of different jobs.
