Kenya - UN highlights malnutrition risk

The United Nations has warned that 500,000 people in Kenya will soon need humanitarian help if the country's political crisis continues to escalate.

The UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that with thousands of people being forced from their homes, malnutrition is a real risk.

Kenya's main opposition party has said it will hold three days of nationwide protests next week, but police say they will not permit the demonstrations.

The former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, has appealed to all sides to find an amicable solution to the country's crisis.

Up to 600 people have been killed since the announcement of Mwai Kibaki's re-election as president on 27 December.
