British Embassy staff in Dublin may strike

Staff at the British Embassy in Ballsbridge have threatened to strike next week over proposed compulsory redundancy notices which were issued to three staff members earlier today.

The individuals are locally recruited managers dealing with UK trade and investment matters in Ireland. Between them they have 20 years of service at the embassy.

Unite, which represents 40 members of staff at the embassy, has called a general meeting of the staff for 15 January.

It has also written to the Ambassador advising that should the compulsory redundancy notices be served next week as indicated that strike action will be initiated.

Dublin is the only British embassy worldwide which recognises trade union membership and there has been a positive and agreed set of procedures dealing with issues and disputes since 2003.

The action taken today, which is understood to have originated in London, falls outside those agreed procedures.
