Seven miners have died and 23 are missing after an explosion in a coal mine in central Kazakhstan.

Dozens of rescue workers at the Abai mine in the region of Karaganda are working to extinguish the fire sparked by the blast and the search for survivors continues.

12 miners were also seriously injured in the explosion.

The region's governor said the explosion was probably caused by a gas leak.

There were 191 miners underground at the time of the blast and 161 were evacuated.

The mine is owned by steel giant Arcelor Mittal.

The blast happened near the site of a 2006 explosion in a mine in which 41 people died. The Luxembourg-based steel giant is facing a lawsuit over that incident.

Arcelor Mittal employees in Karaganda have criticised the company for paying low wages and not doing enough to ensure safety.
