Mwai Kibaki - President swears in new cabinet

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki has begun swearing in a partial cabinet as crisis talks continue over his disputed re-election.

Mr Kibaki named the 17 ministers on Tuesday, appointing minor presidential challenger Kalonzo Musyoka as vice president and leaving open several ministries to members of opposition leader  Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement.

Mr Odinga rejected the move, which sparked further unrest in his strongholds.

African Union chief John Kufuor, who was trying to mediate the crisis, left Kenya this afternoon after a lengthy meeting with Mr Odinga, and a meeting with Mr Kibaki at his state residence.

But the talks failed.

Both sides accuse each other of wrecking the talks. Mr Odinga and Mr Kibaki have not met in person to try to end the crisis.

Meanwhile Kenyan police have fired tear gas to disperse more than 100 women opposition supporters.

They were marching towards a church in the Nairobi to hold prayers for peace in the wake of nationwide rioting sparked by a disputed presidential poll.
