The Minister for Education, Mary Hanafin, has said €252m allocated for school computers under the National Development Plan will be spent over the lifetime of the Programme, which runs up to 2013.

She was defending the Government's school computerisation policy, after the Irish National Teachers' Organisation said none of the funding was spent last year.

Ms Hanafin said she expected to get a report soon from an expert advisory group, established last February, to examine how the €250m should be spent.

She said in the last number of years the Government had already spent nearly €200m on schools' computer facilities.

In a statement today, INTO called on Minister Hanafin to publish a report from the advisory group on computers in schools.

The INTO accused Ms Hanafin of sitting on the report and delaying much needed funding to schools.
