Gardaí are not treating a fire that destroyed a hotel in Roscommon town as suspicious.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at the Royal Hotel just before 9am this morning.

A neighbour raised the alarm when they saw smoke coming from the building.

Up to ten people were in the hotel at the time.

The building and the surrounding premises were evacuated.

The fire started in the ballroom of the hotel but within minutes the whole building was engulfed in flames.

More than 50 firefighters from five units of the Roscommon and Leitrim Fire Brigade tackled the blaze.

It took a number of hours to bring the fire under control.

During the incident, the area around the hotel was sealed off and the main street was closed to traffic.

No one was injured, but the blaze devastated the hotel run by a well-known local family.
