Road deaths unacceptable, says Garda chief

The head of the Garda Traffic Corps, Eddie Rock, has said that although the number of people killed on our roads is dropping, it is still unacceptable.

333 people lost their lives on the roads so far this year, compared to 368 last year.

Speaking on RTÉ's News At One, Eddie Rock said although fewer people have been killed, it is of little comfort to those who have been bereaved because of road accidents.

Earlier on Monday, the Chair of the Road Safety Authority appealed to people to slow down and drive with care today and for the remainder of Christmas.

Gay Byrne says the majority of people are driving too fast. He said that statistics prove many people alive today will not live until the New Year as a result of road accidents.

Mr Byrne appealed for people to slow down, if for nothing else, he said, 'for the honour of Christmas'.
