Hundreds of thousands of people are on the move as the Christmas and New Year holiday travel period takes off.

Large volumes of passengers are using Ireland's roads, airports, and train stations today and tomorrow, during what are traditionally the busiest travel days of the festive season.

Dublin Airport Authority estimates that 860,000 passengers will travel through Dublin airport between today and 4 January.

The Chief Executive of the Road Safety Authority has appealed to people to drive with care as one of the busiest weekends of the year on the roads approaches.

Noel Brett says drivers need to take personal responsibility not to do anything that could end life or seriously injure others.

As well as appealing to people not to drink and drive and to wear seat belts, he has also asked that people think seriously before driving after taking drugs and to obey speed limits.

Mr Brett has also appealed to what he called the 'hardcore' of people who refuse to change their behaviour.

He said some people are just too selfish to listen to the constant messages appealing to people to improve their driving behaviour.
