Irish mobile phone users sent 1.89bn text messages in the third quarter of 2007.
New figures released by ComReg also show that there were 114 mobile phones for every 100 people in Ireland.
The communications regulator also revealed that there were almost 800,000 broadband subscribers at the end of last September.
