Electricity usage has increased by 2% over the Christmas period, according to EirGrid.

The state-owned company has attributed the increase in demand on the national electricity grid to Christmas lights.

Householders, particularly those with outdoor lights, are being encouraged to use energy efficient bulbs where possible.

The number of Christmas lights used in Ireland this year will equate to more than 4,000 transatlantic flights in CO2.
