The condition of the two people hospitalised after collapsing in Longford and Mullingar has improved and both are now listed as stable.

Medical staff at both hospitals are trying to determine if the men's conditions are drug related. Gardaí are conducting an investigation into both illnesses.

On Saturday night/Sunday morning a 17-year-old youth, who is from near Mullingar in Co Westmeath, was found collapsed on a street in the town.

He has been transferred to the Intensive Care unit at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, and this afternoon his condition has improved from critical to stable.

At the Regional Hospital in Mullingar the condition of a 26-year-old man from Longford Town has also improved from critical to stable.

A member of his family found him in his apartment on Saturday afternoon. It is understood he had been attending his Christmas work party the night before.

Gardaí confirmed this morning that they are investigating both incidents. A key aspect of the investigation and medical enquiries will the possibility that drugs could be involved in either case.
