The Labour Party has said the health services need to answers questions on the hiring of a consultant who was at the centre of two cancer screening inquiries in Galway and Cork.

It emerged yesterday that Dr Antoine Geagea, who is from Lebanon, was on sick leave from Finland while he was working in Ireland. He worked in both University College Hospital in Galway and Cork University Hospital.

His employers in Finland said they were surprised to discover he had taken a job in Ireland.

The Finnish Medical Council also said Dr Geagea twice had his work commented on by the authorities there.

An independent inquiry into the misdiagnosis of cancer is due to report shortly.

Dr Antoine Geagea is under fire on two fronts, in Ireland where reviews of his work are taking place in two hospitals, and in Finland where the Irish affair has drawn attention to his current status.

The question some Finns are asking is why did he leave a good consultant's job, and a private practice, to go to Ireland?

In Finland he worked for Huslab, the biggest public sector cancer laboratory in the country.

On arrival in Ireland he was supposed to declare health issues, and details of any investigations into his work.

There were two investigations of misdiagnosis of breast cancer by his private laboratory in Helsinki, but he told Irish authorities there was only one.

The Irish Medical Council contacted their Finnish counterparts about Dr Geagea thee months ago.
