The Minister for Transport and the Marine is to meet Valentia Islanders over the row that has followed his decision to close down the island's Coast Guard maritime radio station.

Noel Dempsey has also approved the closure of the Malin Head coastal radio station, which has led to other protests from Donegal.

Mr Dempsey says no jobs will be lost and the decision is part of a major upgrading of marine safety.

Opponents say the plan is a waste of money when any upgrading could be done at a fraction of the cost in the existing stations.
